SUMMARY

Key Points from the Discussion

  1. The NFRI-PPPL research agreement was executed in December. Funds were received by PPPL and work under the agreement has officially started.
  2. News of the agreement has attracted wide interest, including articles in Science and Nature.
  3. Milestones were reviewed. See H. Neilson's slides, p.4.
  4. Near-term work plans were reviewed. Currently, details of the radial build are being adjusted in preparation for system code analysis by C. Kessel.
    • An update of the design file will be issued by K. Kim on 1 February.

  5. Radial build details issued by K. Kim on 27/28 January were reviewed. Radial build space is allocated for compression structure and leads on the O.D. of the central solenoid. There was a discussion, led by P. Titus, about possibly relocating those components to the I.D. in order to reduce the radial build. It was decided to retain the allocated space on the O.D. at this time. PPPL will further investigate this possibility and provide an update at the next meeting.
  6. Additional small adjustments to the radial build will be made by K. Kim this week and will be issued with the 1 Feb. design package update.
  7. Conductor parameters were reviewed by Y. Zhai in preparation for FEMCAM evaluation. Further e-mail iteration between Y. Zhai and K. Kim is necessary to ensure agreement on conductor parameters and limits, before proceeding with analysis.

  10. Expressions of interest from other U.S. institutions. Sandia National Lab and Univ. of Wisconsin Fusion Technology Institute have contacted PPPL to express interest in joining the K-DEMO collaboration. Their capabilities were discussed as input for future consideration.
  11. Plans for extending the U.S. work scope and funding were briefly discussed. To be continued during February visit to PPPL.
