U.S. Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) Collaboration

The stellarator Wendelstein 7-X, was built at the Greifswald branch of IPP. It uses superconducting coils that allow for continuous operation of the reactor to investigate suitability of the stellarator. The modularity of the coils allows the optimized magnetic field to overcome the drawbacks of the earlier classical stellarators. It is expected that this plasma equilibrium and confinement will be the same size and comparable quality as a tokamak, but without the disadvantages of a flowing plasma. The W7-X predecessor, Wendelstein 7-AS, the first experiment of this new generation, proved some elements of this concept during an initial test in 2002. The more advanced successor, the Wendelstein 7-X, will further investigate the suitability of the new power plant stellarators.
